Strategic Mastery

Program note

"Strategic Mastery," for contrabass clarinet or bass saxophone, draws inspiration from the Muay Thai dance move "Khru Muay." The music mirrors a master observing and intimidating an opponent. The low instrument's rich harmonic partials, deep resonance, and wide range are explored from profound low notes to vivid higher registers. Slow, meditative sections alternate with faster, playful passages, while varied articulations interact with the piano to echo the dancer's precise movement. The work reveals the solo potential of an instrument more often heard in a supporting role.
