Program note
"Echoes of Grace and Valor" is a contemporary composition for flute and piano inspired by the captivating Muay Thai dance. The dance is characterized by a boxer's graceful act of powdering the face before battle, designed to unsettle opponents with delicate, repetitive motions such as kneeling to scoop water and mix powder. The compositional structure mirrors this repetition, employing chords and cluster chords reiterated in units of three. Advanced flute techniques parallel the dancer's intricate movements, while melodic jumps and rhythmic ostinatos draw on traditional Thai melodies and the improvisational style of the Thai oboe, Pi Chawa.
